INTRODUCTION

CORTIVAC 10 TABLET contains Hydrocortisone which belongs to the group of medicines called Corticosteroids. CORTIVAC 10 TABLET is used as a replacement therapy to replace insufficient adrenal hormone in the body that occurs due to inactive/underactive adrenal gland in affected individuals.

CORTIVAC 10 TABLET is also used to inhibit adrenocorticotropic hormone (chemical messenger responsible to regulate cortisol) when taken in combination with aminoglutethimide medicine for breast and prostate cancer. The medicine is also used to treat few types of illness and replace insufficient adrenal hormone after injury, surgery and/or other stressful events.

CORTIVAC 10 TABLET is not recommended for use in patients allergic to hydrocortisone, certain foods, preservatives and/or dyes. It is also not recommended for use in patients with fungal infections (such as thrush, candida) and in patients who recently received/scheduled (for) vaccinations.

Before taking CORTIVAC 10 TABLET, inform your doctor if you have/ever had severe depression, manic depression, septicaemia (life threatening infection), stomach ulcer, chicken pox/shingles, weakened immune system, high blood pressure, heart problems (such as heart attack, congestive heart disease), kidney and/or liver problems.

CORTIVAC 10 TABLET should be used with caution in pregnant and breastfeeding women only if it is clearly necessary. It is also used with caution in children and adolescents (aged below 18 years). The medicine can also be indicated for use in elderly patients (aged above 65 years) after consulting the doctor.

The common side effect of taking CORTIVAC 10 TABLET is mental health problem. Consult your doctor if the symptom worsens.

USES OF CORTIVAC 10 TABLET
As a replacement therapy to replace insufficient adrenal hormone in the body (that occurs due to inactive/underactive adrenal gland)
Inhibits adrenocorticotropic hormone (chemical messenger responsible to regulate cortisol) when taken in combination with aminoglutethimide medicine for breast and prostate cancer

HOW CORTIVAC 10 TABLET WORKS

CORTIVAC 10 TABLET works by replacing insufficient cortisol (naturally produced steroid) levels and blocks the production of certain chemical messengers (responsible for inflammation and allergies) in the body which results in decreased swelling and providing relief from inflammation and pain in affected individuals.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Take CORTIVAC 10 TABLET as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

Stop taking CORTIVAC 10 TABLET and contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects:

Signs of severe allergic reaction such as difficulty in breathing, wheezing, shortness of breath, swelling of face/tongue/lips/other parts of the body, red itchy welts, rash, itching
Feeling depressed (including thinking about suicide), irritable and anxious
Fluctuating mood and sleep disturbance, feeling/seeing/hearing non existing things
Having difficulty in thinking/being confused and experiencing loss of memory
Infections such as fungal/viral (including herpes)
Development of Cushingoid facies (round/moon-shaped face)
Increased blood sugar level
Signs of salt and water retention such as swelling and raised blood pressure
Increased appetite and weight gain
Worsening of seizures
Sleepiness, dizziness/spinning sensation, headache
Changes in vision due to cataract (clouding of eye lens), glaucoma (increased pressure withing the eye), blurred vision, dry eyes, thinning of eye surface, worsening of existing eye infections
High blood pressure, formation of blood clots
Gastrointestinal symptoms such as indigestion, stomach/food-pipe ulcers, bloating and/or abdominal pain
Skin-related symptoms such as slow healing of wounds/cuts, acne, bruising, stretch marks, spider veins and/or excessive hair
Bone, muscle and joints symptoms such as muscle weakness, joint swelling and/or bone thinning (which can lead to fractured/broken bones)
Irregular/lack of menstrual periods
General feeling of being unwell and tiredness
Signs of pseudotumourcerebri (increased pressure within the skull) in children such as headaches with vomiting, drowsiness
Signs of bleeding ulcers such as stomach pain, bleeding from back passage, black stools/vomiting with blood
Signs of pancreatitis (inflammation of pancreas) such as abdominal pain, low blood pressure, loss of consciousness and/or decreased output of urine
Signs of thromboembolism (blood clot in the lung) such as sudden shortness of breath, chest pain and/or coughing up blood
Signs of bleeding ulcers in the stomach such as black stool along with vomiting with blood
Signs of heart failure such as swollen ankles, chest pain, difficulty in breathing & palpitations, irregular heartbeats, irregular /few/rapid pulse, high blood pressure
Signs of aseptic necrosis (necrosis of bone) such as broken bones/fractures, breakdown of bone, joint inflammation in the knee & groin and/or torn tendons
WARNING & PRECAUTIONS
PREGNANCY

CORTIVAC 10 TABLET should be used with caution during pregnancy only if it is clearly necessary. Inform your doctor immediately if you get pregnant while taking this medicine. Consult your doctor before taking CORTIVAC 10 TABLET.

BREASTFEEDING

CORTIVAC 10 TABLET should be used with caution in breastfeeding women only if it is necessary since the medicine may pass through breastmilk. Consult your doctor before taking CORTIVAC 10 TABLET.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

Do not drive or operate machines if you experience extreme tiredness, short lasting dizziness, changes in eyesight (such as blurred vision) and/or muscle weakness after taking CORTIVAC 10 TABLET.

KIDNEY

CORTIVAC 10 TABLET should be used in caution in patients with kidney problems. Consult your doctor before taking CORTIVAC 10 TABLET.

LIVER

CORTIVAC 10 TABLET should be used in caution in patients with liver problems. Consult your doctor before taking CORTIVAC 10 TABLET.

ALLERGY

Do not take CORTIVAC 10 TABLET if you are allergic to hydrocortisone, certain foods, preservatives, dyes and/or any ingredients of this medicine.

HEART DISEASE

CORTIVAC 10 TABLET should be used with caution in patients with heart problems such as heart attack and congestive heart disease. Consult your doctor before taking the medicine.

OTHERS

CORTIVAC 10 TABLET is not recommended for use if you:

Have fungal infections such as thrush, candida and/or any other infections
Have been vaccinated recently and/or schedule to receive any vaccine

Before taking CORTIVAC 10 TABLET, inform your doctor if you:

Have/ever had severe depression and/or manic depression (bipolar disorder)
Have/had septicaemia (life threatening infection), tuberculosis
Have stomach ulcer and/or other digestive problem
Have chicken pox/shingles
Come in contact with people (who have chicken pox, shingles and/or measles) especially if you have not already had these illnesses
Have a weakened immune system
Have a herpes eye infection (type of viral infection)
Had muscle weakness (after taking steroids in the past)
Have recently visited a tropical country
Are suffering from ulcerative colitis (chronic inflammatory bowel disease), epilepsy (seizure), thrombophlebitis (swelling and redness along a vein), exanthematous disease (disease affecting the skin)
Have metastatic carcinoma (cancer that has spread from one part of the body to another), amoebic dysentery and strongyloidiasis (infestation of a gut worm)
Have/had diabetes, high blood pressure, glaucoma (eye condition), osteoporosis (thinning of bone)
Suffer from myasthenia gravies (type of muscle weakening problem), hypothyroidism (condition marked by low thyroid secretion)
Have/had any mental health problems
Have/had pheochromocytoma (adrenal gland tumour)
High blood pressure
Are intolerant to certain sugars such as lactose
Are scheduled for a surgery (requiring anaesthesia)

Use in Paediatrics:

CORTIVAC 10 TABLET should be used with caution in children and adolescents (aged below 18 years). Monitoring of heart function and structure is advised if the medicine is to be administered to a premature baby. Consult your doctor before taking CORTIVAC 10 TABLET.

Use in Geriatrics:

CORTIVAC 10 TABLET should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged above 65 years). Consult your doctor before taking CORTIVAC 10 TABLET.

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug – Drug interactions:

Before taking CORTIVAC 10 TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:

Aspirin (used to reduce pain and relive pain)
Phenytoin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine, primidone (medicines used to treat epilepsy)
Ephedrine (used to treat prevent low blood pressure during anaesthesia)
Rifabutin, rifampicin (medicines used to treat tuberculosis)
Warfarin (medicine used for blood thinning)
Diuretics (used to treat high blood pressure) Ex. chlorothiazide, chlorthalidone
Amphotericin, ketoconazole, itraconazole, pesaconazole, vericonazole (medicines used to treat fungal infections)
Aminoglutethimide (anticancer medicine)
Digoxin, furosemide, bumetanide (medicines used for heart failure)
Erythromycin, telithromycin, clarithromycin (medicines used to treat some infections)
Oral contraceptives (medicines used to prevent pregnancy) Ex. ethinyl estradiol
Somatropin (used as a growth hormone)
Guanethidine, isosorbide mononitrate, isosorbide dinitrate, theophylline (medicines used for heart disease)
Sympathomimetics (medicines used to treat asthma, low blood pressure, cough) Ex. bambuterol, fenoterol, formoterol, ritodrine, salbutamol, salmeterol, terbutaline
Calcium supplements (Ex. Calcium carbonate, calcium citrate)
NSAIDS (medicines used to reduce inflammation and relieve pain) Ex. ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen
Sodium phenylbutyrate (used for urea cycle disorder)
Medicine used in diabetes (Ex. insulin, metformin)
Ritonavir (used to treat HIV)
Methotrexate (medicine used to treat inflammatory conditions)
Cyclosporin (medicine used to prevent transplant organ rejection)
Minoxidil, hydralazine (medicines used to reduce high blood pressure)

B. Drug – Food interaction:

Avoid drinking grapefruit juice while taking CORTIVAC 10 TABLET as it may interfere with the effect of the medicine.

Overdosage:

If you or anyone else accidentally took more of CORTIVAC 10 TABLET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdosage are nausea/vomiting, salt & fluid retention, high blood sugar and/or gastrointestinal bleeding.
