INTRODUCTION

TUSSALYTE contains Dextromethorphan which belongs to a class of medicines known as anti-tussives, which helps to suppress the cough reflex by acting on the cough centre present in the brain. It temporarily helps to relieve dry cough due to common cold, flu or other conditions, and helps to relieve the throat discomfort caused due to dry cough. It also relieves the impulse to cough and helps to get to sleep. Dry cough refers to a cough that does not produce mucus (also known as phlegm or sputum). It is your body’s defensive reflex that functions to keep your airways clear of irritating or obstructing substances so you can breathe effectively.

Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant which exhibits anti-tussive activity and is devoid of analgesic or addictive property and crosses the blood-brain-barrier and activates sigma opioid receptors on the cough center in the central nervous system, thereby suppressing the cough reflex. It absorbs from the gastrointestinal tract, metabolised in the liver and excreted as both unchanged and demethylated metabolites.

Always take TUSSALYTE exactly as directed by your doctor. Before taking this medicine, inform your doctor if you have liver, kidney or heart problems, are pregnant or breastfeeding. Your doctor will give the right dose depends on your child’s age and body weight. The common side effects are dizziness, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhoea.
