NEWBONA SACHET contains Alendronic acid which belongs to the group of medicines called Bisphosphonates. It is used to treat and prevent osteoporosis (weak or brittle bones) in Postmenopausal Women.
It helps to improve bone mass density in patients with weak bones and can also be used to treat osteoporosis caused due to excessive use of corticosteroids (such as prednisone). It also helps in the treatment of Paget’s disease (abnormal bone growth due to disturbances in normal span of bone cells).
Alendronic acid prevents bone loss and helps in building bone mass and density. It works by attaching itself to the bone surface and then stops the action of certain bone cells that destroys the bone mass. It also stabilizes the replacement of new bone tissue growth and prevents abnormal bone growth.
Take NEWBONA SACHET on an empty stomach. Do not lie down immediately after taking NEWBONA SACHET. It is necessary to maintain a good oral hygiene while undergoing treatment with NEWBONA SACHET. Therefore, routinely have dental check-ups throught the treatment to avoid unwanted oral problems.
You should also inform your doctor immediately if you experience any oral problems such as tooth pain or swelling or lossening after taking NEWBONA SACHET.
Before taking NEWBONA SACHET inform your doctor if you have any problems in the kidneys or in the stomach or are scheduled for any oral treatment or dental surgery. Do not take NEWBONA SACHET if you are pregnant or breastfeeding without consulting your doctor.
NEWBONA SACHET is not recommended for use in patients having problems in their food pipe. It is also not suitable for use in patients who are unable to sit or stand upright for at least 30 minutes at a time. The most common side effects of NEWBONA SACHET are headache, dizziness, stomach pain, bloating, indigestion, diarrhoea, constipation, or acid reflux. Consult your doctor if any of the side effect troubles you.

HOW NEWBONA SACHET WORKS
NEWBONA SACHET prevents bone loss and helps in building bone mass and density, where alendronic acid works by attaching itself to the bone surface and then stops the action of certain bone cells that destroys the bone mass. It also stabilizes the replacement of new bone tissue growth and prevents abnormal bone growth. As a result, it improves bone mass, makes them stronger and prevents the risk of fracture.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Take NEWBONA SACHET as advised by your physician. Place the medicine beneath the tongue and do not swallow until it dissolves. Take NEWBONA SACHET on an empty stomach or at least 30 minutes before taking any food, drink, or medicines.
Do not consume tea, coffee, mineral water, or juice along with NEWBONA SACHET. Do not lie down immediately after taking NEWBONA SACHET. Avoid taking NEWBONA SACHET at bedtime.
Stay upright (sitting, standing, or walking) for at least 30 minutes after taking NEWBONA SACHET and do not lie down until you have eaten the first meal of the day. This is followed to prevent the reflux of medicine back to the oesophagus.
Your doctor will decide the suitable dose and duration of therapy for you depending upon your age, body weight and health condition. You may also be prescribed with vitamin D or calcium supplements, along with NEWBONA SACHET to improve your disease condition. Do not stop taking NEWBONA SACHET without consulting your doctor as it can reduce the effectives of this medicine.
SIDE EFFECTS OF NEWBONA SACHET
Gastric problems (ulceration of food pipe, difficulty and pain while swallowing, bloating, indigestion, diarrhoea, constipation, stomach pain and reflux of acid from stomach)
Vertigo (spinning sensation)
Loss of hair
Swelling in joints
Lack of energy or weakness
Presence of excess of fluid especially in legs (peripheral oedema)
Black tarry stools
Nausea and vomiting
Temporary flu-like symptoms usually at the begining of the treatment such as feeling ill, muscl pain and rarely fever)
Inflammation of the eye
Changes in sense of taste
Narrowing of the food pipe
Ulceration seen in mouth or throat and stomach or other peptic ulcers,
Skin rashes because of sensitivity to light
Muscle cramps or spasms and tingling sensation around the mouth or in finger because of low calcium levels
Pain and inflammation of jaw, mainly seen in people who had got tooth extraction done or had a mouth infection
Unusual fracture of the thigh bone, mainly in patients who were on long treatment of osteoporosis.
Stop taking NEWBONA SACHET and contact your doctor or dentist immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
Severe allergic reactions (such as skin rash, itching, swelling of face or lips, eyes causing wheezing, difficulty in breathing)
Signs of severe skin reactions called as toxic epidermal necrolysis or Stevens Johnson syndrome (such as formation of blisters or rashes or other effects seen on eyes, mouth or genitals, skin which leads to itching and increased body temperature)
Difficulty or pain while swallowing and pain behind breastbone
New or worsened heartburn
Tooth problems (tooth pain, swelling or lossening)
Signs of fracture in thigh bone (such as pain, weakness or discomfort in thigh, hip or groin)
HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS
Nausea and Vomiting:
Take NEWBONA SACHET with or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oil rich or spicy foods. Consult your doctor if your nausea worsens.
Hydrate yourself by drinking plenty of fluids, such as water or fruit juices. Consuming ORS can also be beneficial. Do not self-treat diarrhea on your own. Consult your doctor if your diarrhea becomes uncontrollable.
Eat lot of fibre rich foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and cereals. Drink plenty of fluids. Exercise more regularly. Consult your doctor if this side effect bothers you.
Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Lie down or sit immediately if you feel dizzy. Avoid driving or operating any heavy tools or machines while you are feeling dizzy. Do not consume too much of alcohol, as it could aggravate your dizziness. Consult your doctor if you continue to feel dizzy for a prolonged period.
WARNING & PRECAUTIONS
NEWBONA SACHET is not recommended for use in pregenant women. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.
NEWBONA SACHET is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.
DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Do not drive or operate any heavy tools or machines if your ability is affected by NEWBONA SACHET.
Avoid drinking alcohol while taking NEWBONA SACHET.
NEWBONA SACHET should be used with caution in patients who have or ever had any kidney problems. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.
Do not take NEWBONA SACHET if you are allergic to Alendronic acid.
NEWBONA SACHET is not recommended for use if you:
Have certain diseases of the food pipe such as difficulty in swallowing or narrowing of the food pipe
Have low blood calcium levels
Are not able to stand or sit straight for a minimum of 30 minutes
Before taking NEWBONA SACHET inform your doctor if you have:
Barrett’s oesophagus (a condition in which there are changes seen in the cells of lower food pipe)
Had surgery of stomach or food pipe (this does not include pyroplasty (a surgery of widening of stomach outlet))
Or had low Vitamin D levels in the body
Hypoparathyroidism (a condition in which the parathyroid gland does not work properly)
Had dental treatment or planning to undergo any dental surgery
Had pain, swelling and numbness of jaw or feel loosening of a tooth or heavy jaw feeling
Cancer or undergoing radiotherapy or chemotherapy, or taking steroids
Not been reciving regular dental care or smoke or have mouth infection
Inflammation of lining of stomach or the first section of small intestine
Stomach ulcer or other digestive problems such as bleeding in the stomach
Use in pediatrics:
NEWBONA SACHET is not recommended for use in children and adolescents (below 18 years). Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.
Use in geriatrics:
NEWBONA SACHET should be used with caution in elderly patients. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.
A. Drug-Drug interactions:
Before taking NEWBONA SACHET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines such as:
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (used to relieve fever, pain and inflammation) Ex. aspirin and ibuprofen
B. Drug –Food Interactions:
NEWBONA SACHET takes longer time to work if taken with heavy meal or after drinks. It is advised to take NEWBONA SACHET on an empty stomach or atleast 30 minutes before taking any food or drink.
If you or anyone else accidentally took more NEWBONA SACHET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose are heartburn, stomach upset, inflammation of the stomach or food pipe, cramps in the stomach or in the muscle, fits and weakness.

Who should not take NEWBONA SACHET?
NEWBONA SACHET should not be used in patients who are not able to swallow or having any problems in food pipe that hinders swallowing (such as narrowing of the gullet). It should also not be used in patients who can sit or stand constantly for 30 minutes. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant must not take NEWBONA SACHET without consulting their doctor.
What is the use of NEWBONA SACHET?
NEWBONA SACHET is used to treat bone problems such as osteoporosis caused due to aging, menopause, or excessive corticosteroid use. It can also be used to treat Paget’s disease.
Why is NEWBONA SACHET taken once a week?
It is because, NEWBONA SACHET contains a medicine called alendronic acid which acts by blocking the actions of bone killing cells (osteoclasts). Since the process of replacing the older bone cells with newer ones takes around 2-3 weeks for completion, taking NEWBONA SACHET once a week would make it stay on the affected bones sites for a sustained period and effectively stop bone destruction.
What are the side effects of NEWBONA SACHET?
The most common side effects of NEWBONA SACHET are headache, dizziness, stomach pain, bloating, indigestion, diarrhoea, constipation, or acid reflux. Consult your doctor if any of the side effect troubles you. Yes. NEWBONA SACHET helps in preventing osteoporosis and helps in gaining back the lost bone mass. However, consult your doctor before taking.
Can NEWBONA SACHET be taken daily?
Take NEWBONA SACHET as advised by your physician. Your doctor will instruct you on how many days you may need to take this medicine. Strictly follow the instructions given by your doctor.
What precautions do I need to follow while taking NEWBONA SACHET?
Take NEWBONA SACHET on an empty stomach or at least have a time gap of 30 minutes between your first meal and the medicine. Do not take NEWBONA SACHET before going to bed or just after getting up in the morning. Sit or stand or walk straight for at least 30 minutes after taking NEWBONA SACHET. Do not lie down. Do not take NEWBONA SACHET if you are taking any painkiller such as aspirin or ibuprofen. Before taking NEWBONA SACHET inform your doctor if you have in trouble in swallowing.
Will taking a higher dose of NEWBONA SACHET be more effective?
No. Taking a higher dose of NEWBONA SACHET will not be effective. Stick to the dosage that your doctor has prescribed to you. If the prescribed dose is not effective for you, consult your doctor for advice. Your doctor will increase the dose or suggest an alternative therapy depending upon your health condition.
How NEWBONA SACHET works?
NEWBONA SACHET works by binding itself to the bone surface and by stopping the action of bone eating cells. This helps in preventing bone loss and risk of fracture. It also improves bone mass and makes your bones stronger.
Can NEWBONA SACHET cause dental problems?
Yes. NEWBONA SACHET may cause dental problems such as jaw inflammation or pain and loosening of tooth. Therefore, consult your doctor immediately if you experience any such symptoms.
Can I stop taking NEWBONA SACHET once my symptoms subside?
No. Do not stop taking NEWBONA SACHET without consulting your doctor once your symptoms subside, as it may reverse the healed condition. Continue to take NEWBONA SACHET as long as instructed by your doctor.
Can NEWBONA SACHET cause weight gain?
It is unlikely that NEWBONA SACHET would cause increase in weight in patients. However, it may cause peripheral edema (accumulation of fluid in the body) in some patients which may make them feel that they have gained a lot of weight.
